Stump Removal - Fire
How to Remove a Tree Stump

Equipment / Gear / Tools needed:

  • Gloves
  • Safety Glasses
  • Kerosene or fuel oil
  • Drill with drill bit
This method should be considered last on the list of stump removal because of the potentially serious hazards. This site does not recommend this method, but will explain how to do so if it is a last resort. Unfortunately, this is also the easiest, and least labor intensive method as well, making it a top choice for some.
  1. Call your local fire department to make sure this method is legal in your area and safe for stump removal.

  2. Clear all the area around the tree stump of any flammable materials, including but not limited to: wood chips, grass, leaves, and weeds. What ever can burn, clear at least a 3 foot radius around the tree stump.

  3. Drill holes in the stump, as deep and as wide as possible.

  4. Fill these holes with kerosene and let it soak and absorb into the tree. This can take as long as two to three weeks. Add additional kerosene during this time as needed.

  5. When it is time to remove the stump via fire, call your local fire department and inform them of what you are burning and when you are burning it.

  6. Check again to make sure area is clear of all flammable materials.

  7. When the stump has absorbed the kerosene, use charcoal on or at the very base of the tree to light a flame that will burn the stump to the roots.

  8. This should be a low, smoldering flame that can burn for several days. Always keep an eye on your stump while it is burning!

  9. Notify the fire department when the stump fire has burned out.
Removing a tree stump by fire should burn the stump down to the roots. Cleanup should be easy, as the ash can be shoveled and thrown away.

In the case the stump fire becomes large and unmanageable, immediately call your fire department and dial 9-1-1 to notify emergency services.
