Stump Removal - Stump Grinder
How to Remove a Tree Stump

Equipment / Gear / Tools needed:

  • Gloves
  • Safety Goggles
  • Boots (Steel Toe is best)
  • Pants (or Jeans)
  • Stump Grinder
  • Safety/Protective Hat
This method of stump removal involves a machine known as a stump grinder. These come in various shapes and sizes, from portable one-man stump grinders to grinder attachments that come on much larger equipment. Either way, these should be used with extreme caution, and always ask for instructions on how to use them if it is the first time doing so.

Stump grinders are used in a slow, back and forth, side to side motion. The circular blade slowly grinds away the tree stump. Here is a video demonstrating how it is done:

Remember to cut the tree stump down as low as possible before grinding. Ideally, it will be 6 inches to the ground or lower.

Once the stump is cut out, there will be a pile of wood mulch to clean up. This can make great flower bed mulch.

Cost

Renting a portable stump grinder for stump removal can cost anywhere from $50 to $200 for a half day. Always ask for instructions on use if you are not experienced with the machine.

Paying a professional tree removal service that offers stump removal will be priced based on the number of stumps that need grinding, as well as the size of the stumps. Many stump removers will charge by the inch (measuring the diameter of the stump), with additional costs for how high the stump was cut, as well as how rough the surrounding terrain is.
